Canon: Evaluation
Evaluation of editing the first front magazine cover design
For the first front cover, I knew that I wanted to add a collage of different locations. The reason for this was that I knew that it would be different compared to other Canon campaign magazines, and I wanted this one to stand out compared to their previous ones. I also knew that my overall theme for this Canon campaign was going to be about travel, so I wanted to make sure that the majority of the information was about travel. I also knew that I wanted "Shoot your travel" to be a constant theme in my designs as it is a masthead that I created and fits really well with what I am creating. I wanted this to be the first information people see when they pick up the magazine and putting it in the middle made this effect. I also wanted to take into consideration that my audience is 15-25 I had to make it appealing for my age group in all of my designs.
I wanted this design to inspire people to take pictures while they go away and I feel like adding a photo collage made this more inspiring and realistic. I also added different quotes that resemble travel and a camera. These quotes made an impact as they are inspirational, motivational, and catchy quotes that would make people know that they are going to read a travel magazine based on Canon.
As this is a Canon project I knew that I needed to incorporate Canon in some way and I knew that adding a type of camera that would be easily transportable would help people with deciding what type of Canon camera they should use. The camera I have picked is one that I personally use and that I have brought with me on previous trips. This camera has been perfect as it is easily transportable and has all of the features you would need when traveling.
The fonts that I used for the quotes and masthead were all from the editing app 'Canva'. I used the font "moon time" for the masthead because I liked how it looked as it created a fancy style. Also as it has a wavy effect it fits with the beach background and the waves. I added a black shadow around the white text to create a pop-out effect, I also did this so it did not blend in with the background. For the different quotes, I used the font "Bree serif" and this was because I wanted the font to be easily readable but also look different from a regular font such as Arial. For the last two quotes, I changed the colour from white to black because one person in my audience feedback said it was hard to read. After all, it blends in with the background.
Overall I am really happy with my first front cover because it has everything that a magazine is going to need and it also has travel and Canon as a good mix. After having different ideas about the background, type of quotes, and what to add to make this look like a magazine, I am glad that I created this one. I used my audience's feedback and made necessary changes that made this magazine's front cover look amazing and much more professional.
Evaluation of editing the second front magazine cover design
As I wanted to create a different design for the first front magazine cover I needed to think of different locations, information, and placements. I feel like this was a great second idea as they are both unique but also have some consistencies.
The background I wanted to be different from a beach as I wanted to pick something that people could experience while they go away. As I already knew that I wanted my location to be Turkey Dalyan I wanted to pick somewhere that reminds me of that place, as I have been there many times. I picked the boat marina as there are loads of different boat trips you can go on.
For the masthead, I picked the placement to be in the middle as I still wanted to create the effect of "this is what you should do while visiting Turkey and other places". Even though this is the same masthead I wanted to make the font different compared to the first design. The font is "Libre Baskerville" with a black shadow around it. This font is basic but also fancy as it is not a standard font. The other text I have placed is in the font "Canva sans". This is because I wanted it to be basic as it is important information or standard information. I added a yellow border around each of them to make it stand out.
The Canon camera is there for the same reason as the first design, this is because I knew that I wanted to have some consistency in my designs and the masthead and Canon camera are consistent.
Overall I am happy with the design and I am glad that it stands out compared to the first design. This front cover would make people interested in visiting Turkey and more specifically Dalyan. I used my audience's feedback to make necessary changes and doing this made me realise that I had some objects in the way of certain elements that is going to need some space. I also removed something that I realised I did not need in the end and it made my magazine front cover look blurry in some parts.
Evaluation of editing the print advert design
As this is going to be inside the magazine I wanted to include one location where people could have information about what they can do there. I also wanted to add some well know places within that location to make people realise how beautiful it is in person. I also only made one design as I was confident in what I wanted to create, and I did not want a different design that wouldn't resemble Dubai in the same way.
This location is Dubai and I put the background image of the Burji AL Arab. I picked this as the background because I really liked the picture I had chosen and the colour scheme of the background. Also the location of this hotel you can see it in many different places in Dubai Palm.
For the masthead, I still kept "shoot your travel" as it shows that everything inside of the magazine is linked. I added "in Dubai" as this advert is primarily based on Dubai as the location and I wanted people to realise that Dubai has many different buildings, creative objects, and sculptures all around which means that you are going to be taking pictures all the time. The font I have used is "Libre Baskerville", after going through a lot of different fonts this one fitted perfectly with the background image. Even though I already used this one I did not want to pick a different font that could potentially spoil what I want to create. The small text information is also in this font.
For the small images, I wanted to add three different iconic places that Dubai has built or been known for people all over the world to go and see in person. The different building "The Dubai Frame and Burji Khalifa" has features that allow you to see the view from where you are allowed to go up (especially the Burji Khalifa). The Burji Khalifa is the tallest building in the world and has been mentioned in one of the films "Mission impossible" Tom Cruise actually climbed up the building for his role. Adding this as one of the small images would make people interested to visit Dubai to see the building in person and the views as they are spectacular. The desert safari is a trip that takes you around the desert island in an SUV. You have a full experience of Dubai culture with shows, food, and camel rides, it is a perfect experience for families and people in my age group of 15-25. This is one of the common trips people go on in Dubai and it is an amazing experience. There are also many different trips you can go on but this is one that I have been on.
The Canon camera is there for the same reason as the first design, this is because I knew that I wanted to have some consistency in my designs and the masthead and Canon camera are consistent.
Overall I am really happy with this design as it has all of the important parts of Dubai in one advert. People looking at this advert will understand what Dubai is about and what they have to offer. I had one feedback from my Audience form saying that I should change the camera lens to a full-size camera. Doing this made it look so much better as they said it looked like an "eye", and I agree with them and I am glad that I changed the camera.
Overall editing experience for all three designs
Overall editing these designs I did not have many problems apart from the drafts I had made before the ones I used for my audience feedback, as they did not look like a magazine front cover. After realising this I made changes that massively improved my designs and I also added different elements that made the designs better. The app I used "Canva" was easy to navigate and it helped as I had some experience in using the app. Overall I am very happy with my designs and decision on my final front cover.
As I already knew what I wanted to create from what my flat plan designs were, it made it a lot easier for me to create the products. Even though I did add some features that were not on my flat plan designs, I am glad I added these in as it made my front covers look so much better than what I originally planned. I also did not add some straplines and information at the top of the front cover on my flat plans. This was because I did not realise that I had to add these on while I was doing the flat plan. Once I realised this not that long later I added them into my design and put it in problem-solving for my pre-production dairy.
For the print advert, I knew what I wanted and where because I used my flat plan the most for this design. This was because I had no reason to change it as I only needed to add a strapline and add a Canon camera. This design was the only design that I stuck with the flat plan.
